Despite professing to hate theatre, Martin McDonagh is widely regarded as one of the greatest dramatists of his generation. He burst onto the scene in the late nineties with two trilogies of violent, black comedies set in Ireland which started with The Beauty Queen of Leenane. Hangmen was written in 2015 and it represents his most mature and sophisticated play to date.
