Audition date: Thursday 27 July, 7:30pm

Rita, (real name Susan), wants to sing a better song. She feels trapped in the working-class world of the 1980s, doomed to a life of hairdressing and having babies.

She sees her escape route as education and enrols in an Open University course on English Literature, despite the fact that her previous reading has been limited to Rita Mae Brown’s Rubyfruit Jungle and the poetry of Roger McGough. There she meets Frank, her tutor, a failed poet, who is himself trapped in an academic world in which he is tired and disillusioned. Only alcohol helps and his main reason for taking on the Open University work to fund this growing habit.

Unlike the film the play is a two-hander focussing solely on Rita and Frank. Over the course of a year, we see their relationship develop and the changes each of them goes through. It offers a marvellous opportunity for two people to show off their acting skills and I will need strong actors who are able to take on these fantastic and very demanding roles.
